Why we started Indoartisans? A note from the founders.
A note from the founders - Prapti and Etush
We’re a director-producer couple who’ve spent years working on documentaries, brand films, and government campaigns. Through our work, we’ve had the privilege of meeting people from all walks of life. Listening to their stories, documenting their lifestyles, and understanding their everyday realities.
Our last project took us to the deep, forested hills of the Northeast — remote villages where ancient tribal cultures are slowly disappearing under the weight of modernisation. What we saw stayed with us. It wasn’t just the crafts that were fading. It was entire ways of life, entire identities. Erased quietly, without resistance.
Somewhere in those jungles, the idea for Indoartisans took root.
At the core of it, we are content and marketing professionals. We understand storytelling. We understand how platforms work. And we realised that if these communities were given the right kind of support — simple, clear, respectful support — they could participate in the digital economy without giving up their essence.
That’s how Indoartisans was born.
Not as a marketplace, but as a solution. A system that helps artisans from more rural, remote, and tribal areas cross the bridge into modern commerce, especially e-commerce — without losing their voice.
What exactly does Indoartisans do?
We realised that one of the biggest barriers was digital literacy. Most platforms expect the seller to take charge — create an account, upload images, fill in specs, track payouts. That’s just not realistic for a large part of our artisan population.
So we removed that barrier entirely.
Our team visits them directly. We photograph the products. We write the descriptions. We explain the legal bits, step by step. We give them a physical inventory sheet they can refer to, in their language and format. We design packaging that holds its own against the best in the business. We manage the shipping. We handle the payouts. They pack the product and hand it over to the courier. That’s it.
The pricing? We let them set it — often with a little surprise, because we pay more than they expect.
We also run digital ads to promote their work, so that the product isn’t just online — it’s visible. It’s being seen. It’s being valued.
Yes, this makes our growth slower.
But we’re okay with that. Because we know the difference it makes.
While other e-commerce platforms wait for sellers to show up, we go where the sellers are — often beyond the reach of the internet. Because that’s where the real stories live.
If we can protect those stories and give them a fair chance in the market, we believe we’ll have done something worthwhile.
What are we trying to build?
Like most founders, we have a dream. Ours is rooted in cultural preservation — using the tools we know: content, commerce, and marketing.
We want to build a platform that brings the stories, crafts, and identities of India’s artisans to people who care about authenticity — not just as a trend, but as a way of life.
And for that, we need your support.
